Not all SPFs are created equal. Behind every tube lies a choice between two very different approaches to sun protection: mineral and chemical. Understanding the difference is the first step to choosing an SPF that suits your skin and your values.
What Is a Mineral Sunscreen?
Also called a physical sunscreen, it uses naturally occurring minerals, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, to form a protective barrier on the skin's surface. Rather than being absorbed, these minerals reflect and scatter UV rays away from the skin.
It's effective immediately, gentle on sensitive skin, and considered safe for pregnancy, children and coral reefs.
What Is a Chemical Sunscreen?
A chemical sunscreen relies on synthetic filters, such as avobenzone, octinoxate, oxybenzone or octocrylene, that penetrate the upper layers of the skin, absorb UV rays, and convert them into heat.
The texture is typically lighter and invisible, but these filters need 15–20 minutes to activate and can cause irritation. Some have also been linked to hormone disruption and coral bleaching, and are now banned in several sun destinations.
The Key Differences at a Glance
| Criterion | Mineral | Chemical |
|---|---|---|
| Active ingredients | Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide | Avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene… |
| Mechanism | Reflects UV rays | Absorbs UV rays |
| Activation | Immediate | 15–20 minutes |
| Texture | Richer, possible white cast | Light, invisible |
| Sensitive skin | Excellent tolerance | Can irritate |
| Pregnancy & children | Recommended | Use with caution |
| Reef-friendly | Yes | No |
Which One Should You Choose?
Opt for a mineral sunscreen if you have sensitive, reactive or acne-prone skin, if you're pregnant, or if you care about protecting marine life. It's also the go-to for children and post-procedure skin.
Chemical filters may appeal if you prefer an ultra-light, invisible finish but be mindful of the ingredient list and avoid oxybenzone and octinoxate in particular.
Whichever you choose, the essentials remain: broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 minimum (ideally 50), and reapplication every two hours.
